A man in Florida will be behind bars for 2.5 years, as he was recently sentenced in a case where he was accused of working as a drug mule. According to the reports, he swallowed a total of 115 cocaine pellets.
The man, who is 32 years old, was a native of Jamaica, though he was living in Miramar. He brought the pellets to South Florida from Jamaica.
According to the man’s lawyers, he was manipulated and used by other drug dealers since he was addicted and desperate to do anything that he could. They said the man was both hard-working and educated, but that his desperation caused him to take such drastic steps.
He apologized when he was standing before the judge, saying he had made poor choices that would haunt him. He also noted that he’d let down his son, who is just three years old, and the rest of his family. He was arrested back in September, and he said he’d been working since then to break his addiction.
All told, the man admitted to around 15 successful trips while smuggling the drugs between Jamaica and Florida. He said he started with a much smaller amount of pellets—just 15—and gradually got to the point where he could carry many more.
He was arrested on Sept. 11 of this year. His plane left the island and landed at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, where police caught him.
Those who are facing federal drug charges still have the right to a fair trial, and it’s important for them to know all of their legal defense options.
