Teens report less drug and alcohol use, but some still at-risk

Many of us can look back on our teen years and recognize that we may have made bad choices. It is generally normal for teens to push some boundaries and engage in risky behaviors. These behaviors include drug and alcohol use.

Reuters reports on the results of a study into teens’ current use of cannabis and alcohol. Researchers commonly look at these trends in order to assess whether safety and warning efforts are working to reach the youth regarding the dangers of substance abuse. The newest numbers suggest that efforts to curb teen drug and alcohol use might be working.

Still, there is a percentage of kids continuing to engage in the risky behavior. Those who are caught with or using drugs face more than reprimanding from their parents; they also face potential legal challenges and long-term consequences.

The following are a few of the notable trends that the annual survey reveals:

  • More high-school seniors are using marijuana in states with medical marijuana laws.
  • Teens are more likely today than in the past to use marijuana or e-cigarettes versus traditional tobacco.
  • More than 6 percent of high-school seniors admit to using marijuana daily.
  • More than 22 percent of high-school seniors claim they have used marijuana at least once in the past month.

If you are reading this drug crimes defense blog, maybe you are doing so because you are worried about your teen’s future. Did he or she get caught up in a drug arrest in Florida? Teens can tend to think that alcohol and marijuana are no big deal. An arrest and charge, however, are big deals. You are right to be worried, and you would be right to discuss your kid’s drug case with a trusted drug charges lawyer in order to try to mitigate the situation.
